The Art Theatre Karolos Koun, nissos Publications, and POLITES Non-profit Cultural
Association welcome Jan Fabre and his theatre group, Troubleyn, to Athens in the
historic Ypogeio (the famous stage of legendary Director and teacher Karolos Koun).
The occasion for this meeting is the publication of the manual, by Jan Fabre, visual
and theatre artist and director, performer and author, and Luk Van den Dries,
dramatist and theatre scholar at the University of Antwerp: From Practice to
Theatrical Practice. Jan Fabre’s Instructions for the 21st Century Performer, published by nissos Publications. It analyses the method, through exercises and techniques, that connects acting, speech, rhythm, and movement uniquely and innovatively and has influenced and shaped physical theatre in the 21st century.
This book, the result of Fabre’s forty years of experience and work as a theatre and
opera director and choreographer, has already been translated into nine languages,
including Greek, translated by Sylvia Solakidis, while translation into four more is in
progress. It is addressed both to a specialized group of actors and dancers, and to a
wider audience of theatre lovers. For the public, the book offers an insight into how
performers prepare for their stage appearances. For actors and dancers, it is a book
of exercises that provides detailed instructions on how to achieve the distinctive
stage performance that constantly tests the limits of the human body.
